Nothing that has happened today has surprised us, says Farbrace
England’s assistant coach Paul Farbrace said there was no surprise in the pitch offering assistance for the spinners and with England precariously placed at 103/5, Farbrace said the players have to dig deep and find a way to get themselves out of a deep hole.

In an interaction with the media post the day’s play Farbrace touched upon a variety of topics.
Excerpts:
On the mood in the camp after the day’s play:
Not a lot was said. We knew it was going to be tough and turn. We thought that we can expect going to be more variable bounce. They’ve got a high-quality spin attack. Nothing that’s happened today that surprised us. What we’ve got to do is play better under pressure. We had a period today that was meek and mild and soft. We’ve got to cut those periods out of our game. Having fought back this morning and show a lot of skill with the ball, to have that period this afternoon was disappointing. Got to cue out and cope with better.
On Root’s dismissal:
It is disappointing, especially to get to 50 and get in and get out. He was in good touch, hitting that one-bounce four down the ground but that’s a time when Joe will look back and think he could have done things differently. He doesn’t need telling. He’s massively disappointed
On what went wrong:
Cooky’s got a good call, then a run-out, then frenetic period of play where it looked like something was going to happen every ball. Stokes and Bairstow showed if you do apply yourself, being positive with your feet and movements, defend and leave well you can be successful on this pitch. This is something our players have got to learn. We have a couple of young players and we must find a way and get on with it. There is a lot of cricket to come in this series. We are going to have periods like that and cope better with him.
On Ben Duckett’s dismissal and on playing spin:
We don’t have concerns about the way he’s playing them. He’s worked very hard against spin and practised very hard. He has made some adjustmens already. We must trust him to play is way. He has to trust himself to know the key is to believe in his defence. A player should find a way of improving and working on defensive technique. Ben Stokes a good example of that. We’re not panicking over him, but he knows he’s got to find a way to step up.
On the overall performance:
There is no point in making excuses. Players should adapt quickly if they are going to have long international careers. We’ve had one little wobble this afternoon. That’s the nature of the game. Chink in your armoury and top bowlers do exploit that. It is one tough session. We should find a way to cut that out if we’re serious about being one of the best teams in the world.
