Short balls to Moeen was planned on day two: Umesh

India appeared to have lost the plot in the second session and pacer Umesh Yadav said the wicket wasn’t turning as much as they would like. “I think it is very difficult to bowl on this track because ball is not turning that much. Like a typical Chennai wicket, it is a little bit different. They got some quick runs, but I think the ball is not turning that much. That is the problem, we can't get wickets and that momentum,” he said.

The Indian pacers tested Moeen Ali with short balls and the left-hander, who is known to have a weakness to the short ball, perished when he tried to pull Yadav. The pacer said the bowlers targeted Moeen’s left shoulder and it was a strategy that was devised before the start of play. “This plan (of bowling short) is already there. On Friday, the fast bowlers didn't bowl that much. We came and we thought about it on Saturday morning, spoke to the captain and coaches and we made a plan that we will bowl short to Moeen and make him play all the balls. We wanted to bowl to his left shoulder and after that we got the momentum. He tried to pull some balls and it was good for the team,” he added.

The pacer said India haven’t lost their grip on the match yet and there is a lot of cricket to come. “They have won the toss but it has been only two days of cricket, there are three more days left. If we bat well and bat long and we would try to bowl them out in the next innings. Let's see how the wicket behaves, if it turns after the third day. I think there is still some interest left in the game,” Umesh added.

On bowling with senior paceman Ishant Sharma, Umesh said: “He is a very senior bowler and has a lot of experience. He has played 60-plus Test matches and I think it is a very positive sign to have such an experienced bowler. He just came back and he's bowling very easily. It just helps a lot, whenever your senior bowler is bowling with you as the confidence can rub on you too.”
