A national-level woman hockey player was found dead on the railway tracks in Haryana's Rewari, the GRP said today.

He said Jyoti hailed from Vijay Nagar in Sonepat.

"The driver of the Chandigarh-Jaipur Intercity Express reported that a young woman suddenly appeared before the train when it was crossing an overbridge near the Rewari station late in the evening. The woman was run over by the train despite brakes being pulled by the driver," the official quoted the driver as saying.

"Later when the GRP was informed, the hockey player's body was found at the spot," Singh said.

He said that no suicide note was found from the spot.

"The postmortem examination was conducted yesterday. We talked to her family but they told us there was no reason for her to end her life like this and could not believe that she could commit suicide. However, we are conducting investigations," he added.

The GRP official said Jyoti had left home on Wednesday and told her parents that she was going to the Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, to get the spelling of her name corrected in her certificate.

"Her family said Jyoti had called them in the evening and told them that her bus has broken down and that she will get a bit late in reaching home," he said.

The GRP found the player's mobile phone ringing and answered the call and it were her parents on the other side of the phone and this way she was identified, he added.
