While coach Badani said practice matches provide the youngsters with a wonderful platform to perform and get on the selectors’ radar, captain Gurkeerat said the paucity of time in assembling their unit will not be much of a hindrance. Gurkeerat, who made his ODI debut against Australia last year, said his teammates are familiar with the current Australian players as they have played with and against them in the IPL and the ‘A’ level matches.
“I’m happy to have got an opportunity to play against Australia again as I had made my debut there. It’s a chance to perform well and impress upon the selectors,” said Gurkeerat. Badani said the importance of a tour match can’t be overemphasised and shared an anecdote dating back to 2003.
“I remember I was dropped from the national team and got picked for a side game against New Zealand. I went on to score a century and that helped me get back into the team,” recalled the 40-year-old. Gurkeerat opined that this match will also enable them to get into the preparation mode for the upcoming Ranji season, even though it’s a different format.
“I think every game helps regardless of the format. There can’t be a better way to start than to play against a top-notch team like Australia. All the boys are raring to go and they are well aware that there is a lot riding on this match,” added Gurkeerat. When asked about the challenges he faced as a coach, Badani said there isn’t much scope for coaching in such a short span.
“I don’t see myself as a coach. All the players are professional and they know what needs to be done. I see my role as more of a man-management and a facilitator,” said Badani.
