Nithyashree’s stock soars high

Tamil Nadu’s 14-year-old paddler M Nithyashree is on a roll after winning the U-15 National singles championship beating Munmun Kundu from West Bengal in Dharwad recently. Delighted as she is at winning her first National title, Nithyashree felt there was a stage when she thought she wouldn’t get there.

“I lost the first three games and I didn’t expect that I would win from there on. But, I didn’t lose hope till the end and kept fighting. Even in the fourth and sixth games, I found the going tough but I forced her into making some errors to hand back the advantage to me,” said Nithyashree, a class XI student of the Hindu Senior Secondary School in Chennai. Nithyashree credited her coach MV Subin Kumar for instilling confidence in her.

“Even when I’m not performing well, he encourages me a lot. In the final when everything looked lost, he was the one who urged me to give it my all in the remaining games”, added the Tamil Nadu and India’s number two in the sub-junior category. An ardent admirer of Japan’s Mima Ito, Nithyashree has a long list of tournaments lined up in the next few months.

“I will be competing in the state ranking tournament next week. This year I have won one and finished runner up in three. My immediate target is to be the number one in both the state and the national level,” signed off Nithyashree.
