Three teenagers Aravindh Chithambaram (18), R Praggnanandhaa (12) and Karthikeyan Murali (18) finished third, fourth and seventh respectively in the World Junior Chess Championship in Tarvisio (Italy), a record for both India and Tamil Nadu.
Chennai lad Praggnanandhaa had the best chance to win the title if he had won against Rasmus Svane of Germany in the last round but he drew and fell half a point behind Tari Aryan (Norway), Manual Petrosyan (Armenia) and Aravindh, who all logged 8.5 points from 11 rounds.
Tari became World junior champion on tiebreak while Petrosyan finished runner-up. It was a special day for Chess Gurukul coach and Grandmaster RB Ramesh as all the three young achievers are from his stable.
