Hunger to make it big was always there: Shubhankar

Though it has been three months since he made the headlines with his Johannesburg Open win last year, India’s latest golf sensation Shubhankar Sharma can’t keep that away from his mind. So much so, he was ecstatic when asked to recount that golden moment during a golf award function here on Friday.

“It was fantastic, a dream come true. I always had the hunger to make it big at the European Tours. I was pleased with the way I played out there,” said Shubhankar.

Shubhankar, who was once a part of a clinic conducted by South African Ernie Els in 2008, switched roles this time around, training a bunch of budding golfers in a session conducted at the TNGF Cosmo Club here.

“I myself have been a part of so many clinics like this as a kid. I had attended one in 2008, with Ernie (Els) imparting some of his intricacies to myself and my fellow friends,” remarked the 21-year-old.

“It feels good to contribute something in terms of gameplay to these aspiring kids. I am really happy that so many of them have come out to participate in this event,” he went onto add. Shubhankar got off the blocks in fine fashion at the World Golf Championships in Mexico two weeks ago, leading a pack of star-studded players from various nations. He had also won in Malaysia last month serving notice to the leading players.

Commenting on his current form, the two-time European title-winner asserted, “I feel I am peaking at the right time. That is one of the reasons why I got into the Masters. Hopefully I can keep on continuing playing in this manner.”

Asked about that advice he would give to the current crop of youngsters, he laughed, “I remember being a kid not many years back. They will have to keep believing in their abilities and practise with utmost dedication. Once you execute both, everything is possible.”

Speaking on his time outside the golf course, he said, “I am a very fun loving person. It is always serious business on the course but once I am off it, I prefer to enjoy life.”
