Goals from Edwin Sydney, Romario and an own goal from Tamizh Mani was enough for the defending champion to secure its first win of the season, after two draws in its previous encounters. Edwin opened the account for CCFC in the 20th minute after he left a few defenders in his trail and slotted the ball home from outside the 18-yardbox.
CCFC completely controlled the proceedings in the first 45 minutes, but managed to have only a one-goal advantage going into the break. Senior team assistant coach Jordi Gris was seen passing his instructions to the men in orange.
It started the second half on a very positive note, continuously probing into opposition’s box for the first 15 minutes. CCFC doubled its lead through a quick counter-attack as Beautin set it up for Romario, who hit it into the bottom left corner.
Chennai City coach Sathish Kumar was delighted with the way his side converted its chances after taking home only two points in their first two games. The game went from bad to worse for Southern Railway as it conceded an own goal, after the goalkeeper’s clearance hit Tamizh Mani.
“We could have won the first two games as well. In our earlier games, we didn’t pounce on our chances. But in this game, we made good use of it. I am happy that we got a win. Here after, we will take it one game at a time. We will have to improve our game in the final third,” said Sathish Kumar.
Commenting on ‘Man of the Match’ Edwin’s showing during the contest, he said, “You must have seen Edwin play in the I-League. It is obviously a boost when a player like him is part of our team.”
In the other match, Viva Chennai secured an easy 4-0 win over Arrows FC. Seikho Hao Tuboi, Shem Marton, Basant Rai and Eze Elochukhu Dainel scored one each. Two matches are set to take place on Monday. Chennai Customs RC will lock horns with Chennai FC while Hindustan Eagles FC will play ICF.
