Chennai United will now have to contend with the not-sopleasant prospect of playing in the First Division. AGORC and Swaraj FC are the two teams that secured promotion to the Senior Division.
With Indian Bank winning the league a day before, there wasn’t much riding on this match except for some salvaging of pride for Chennai United and finishing higher up the table for Viva. Viva treated the match with the seriousness it demanded and, as expected, it dominated from the kick-off. Chennai United defence that let the team down throughout this forgettable campaign looked clueless yet again in the face of unremitting spells of aggression from the Viva forwards.
Apart from scoring a consolation goal, the listless Chennai United was found wanting in creating opportunities as the Viva defence neutralised the threat with ease. It came as a surprise to see that Viva went into the break with only a one-goal lead. Just two minutes after resumption, Shaik Katri scored Viva’s second goal. Chennai United’s Hari Krishnan narrowed the deficit down but it couldn’t capitalise on that goal as it was let down by wayward passing.
Although sitting on a healthy lead, Viva showed no signs of relenting in its hunt for goals and added two more to end its season with a flourish.
RESULT: Viva Chennai 4 (Rajesh 28, Shaik Katri 47, Lalawpula 83, Eze Danieh 90+3) bt Chennai United FC 1 (Hari Krishnan 62)
