Essex declared its first innings at 359 for eight after Paul Walter scored a fluent 75. India then batted for a little under a session, making 89 for two losing Shikhar Dhawan and Cheteswar Pujara in the process. Rahul batting as an opener in this innings remained unbeaten on 36. James Foster and Paul Walter added 91 runs for the sixth wicket but once the partnership was broken Indian bowling looked like bowling the host out.

Umesh Yadav was easily the pick of the Indian bowlers taking four wickets for 35 runs from 18 overs. He removed Foster and then accounted for Matt Coles for a duck in his next over caught by Shikhar Dhawan. Walter finally fell to Ishant Sharma after facing 123 balls and hitting 13 fours and a six.

BRIEF SCORES:

India 395 and 89/2 in 21.2 overs (Lokesh Rahul 36*, A Rahane 19*) & 89/2 in 21.2 overs vs Essex 359/8 decl (Kyle Pepper 68, Tom Westley 57, Paul Walter 75,  Umesh Yadav 4/ 35 , Ishant Sharma 3/59)
