ONGC beats Indian Railways in a thriller

Defending champion ONGC pulled off a dramatic 4-3 win over Indian Railways in a Pool ‘A’ match of the All India MCC Murugappa Gold Cup hockey tournament here Monday.

Action during Indian Army vs Central Secretariat on Monday

Indian Army defeated Central Secretariat 3-2 in another Pool ‘A’ match. The encounter between ONGC and Railways saw action from the word go. Ranjan Kundulna drew first blood for the Railways in the second minute. Seven minutes later, ONGC restored parity as Gurjant Singh slotted home from a penalty corner.

The two strong teams showed a lot of intent but there were no further goals as they went into the interval at 1-1.

The second half saw a flurry of goals as Railways went on the attack and scored twice, in the 41st and 43rd minutes, through Sayyad Niyaz Rahim and Harsahib Singh respectively.

The defending champion came roaring back and reduced the margin in the 45th minute through Gurjant Singh’s strike.

The battle for supremacy continued till the very end with both sides looking to score.

Mandeep Antil scored in the 67th minute as ONGC levelled the score. Gurjant scored his third goal of the game in the dying minutes to secure a win for ONGC in a thriller. Army led 1-0 at half-time through a strike from Sukhdeep Singh in the 28th minute.  Army went 2-0 up when Sanjay Toppo scored in the 41st minute. Central Secretariat pulled one back in the 52nd minute when Pawan Kumar successfully converted a penalty stroke. Army increased the lead in the 66th minute when Rajnath sounded the board from a penalty corner. Central Secretariat reduced the margin to 2-3 as Pawan Kumar scored from a penalty corner.
