10 Tamil Nadu players up for grabs

Left-arm spinner R Sai Kishore, hard-hitting batsman Shahrukh Khan and the slinger G Periyasamy are among the 10 Tamil Nadu Cricket Association-registered players who will be up for grabs in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2020 auction, which is slated to take place in Kolkata on Thursday.

Leg-spinner Varun Chakaravarthy, the joint-costliest player in the previous IPL auction at Rs 8.4 crore, is also available. Varun, whose contract wasn’t extended by Kings XI Punjab, made just a solitary appearance in the 12th edition (against Kolkata Knight Riders in Kolkata) and has been on the sidelines for about seven months due to a finger injury.

The mystery slow bowler took no part in the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) 2019, Vijay Hazare Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. With the next IPL season at least three-and-a-half-months away, one would expect the 28-year-old to be match fit by then. However, chances of him walking away with a huge sum are pretty slim.

Sai Kishore had a dream Syed Mushtaq campaign, topping the ‘Most Wickets’ chart with 20 scalps. The left-arm orthodox bowler, who also had an impressive average (10.4), economy rate (4.63) and strike rate (13.4), attended trails at defending champion and four-time title-winner Mumbai Indians, prior to the auction.

Fellow finger spinner Siddharth made his way into the Tamil Nadu squad only midway through the domestic 20-over competition but was a regular in the latter half of the tournament. His exploits (12 wickets in five matches) earned him a call to the Sunrisers Hyderabad selection at the start of this month.

Utility cricketer Shahrukh showed he is capable of clearing the ropes with ease while representing Tamil Nadu recently. The Chennai-born lad can open the batting and go hammer and tongs at the death overs. Right-arm medium pacer Periyasamy made heads turn in his debut TNPL outing with his toe-crushing yorkers.

The Chepauk Super Gillies player was the best bowler in the fourth edition of the franchise-based event, scalping 21 wickets at a fantastic average of 10.48. Other TNCA-registered players who will be a part of the auction are C Hari Nishaanth, S Manigandan, Baba Aparajith, M Mohammed and Mohan Abhinav.

All above-mentioned uncapped players except Varun have a base price of Rs 20 lakh – the minimum at the auction. Teams which wish to acquire Varun will have to bid at least Rs 30 lakh.
