Indeed, that is not all as before he could muster up the required courage to put out the conflagration, another calamity in the form of a hurricane, arriving from Hobart, will darken his team’s door on Sunday. The time is ripe for him to parade his troubleshooting ability on a cricket field as his team’s fortunes are spiralling down at the halfway stage.
The current scenario couldn’t get any more unnerving posing a serious test of his leadership qualities. And this after his team, for the second season running, is desperately looking for a few wins that will help it emerge from the bowels of the Big Bash League points table.
The Perth side boasts a great pedigree being the only franchise to win the Big Bash three times and coming runner up twice.Last season, however, things went pear-shaped with the team finishing at the bottom of the pile. In this edition, Scorchers is currently occupying sixth position, which is not in keeping with its recent record of success.
A man of great resource and someone who prides himself on his team’s work ethic, Marsh is confident that his battle-hardened side will weather whatever storm that comes its way starting with the immediate challenge of taking on Hobart Hurricanes at home on Sunday.
Excerpts from aninteraction with DT Next:
On last season’s poor showing: T20 cricket is about winning big moments and pressure moments. In the past we have been very good at that. Last year we lost a couple of close games and in this format it’s very easy to let games slip away if you lose close ones so I put it down to that.
On the involvement of foreign players in BBL: It’s always great to have the best players in the world playing alongside us. We knowhow good Dale Steyn and AB de Villiers have been for South Africa.
Hopefully they will enjoy playing for their Big Bash teams and the spectators will get pleasure from watching them and we would like to play well against them and beat them.
On this year’s World T20: I certainly think that in our conditions Australia will be one of the favourites for the title. The beauty of T20 cricket is that on any given day you can win or lose to any side and that’s what will make the World Cup much more exciting for fans.
On whether he thinks he will be in the World T20 squad: I don’t want to look too far ahead as it will make you lose your perspective. I’m enjoying every match I’m playing at the moment. It’s a T20 World Cup year but for me it’s just about preparing well for every game. The WC is a long way away and there’s a lot of cricket to be played before that team gets picked.
