Arsenal punished City by being lethal on the counter-attack

Days after Mikel Arteta’s side beat Premier League winner Liverpool, the Spaniard outfoxed his managerial mentor Pep Guardiola, with his players executing his plan to perfection. Predictably, City enjoyed the majority of the possession but Arsenal was gritty and disciplined as well as being lethal on the counter-attack.

City dominated the early exchanges, but was stopped in its tracks when Aubameyang produced a neat finish in the 19th minute following a flowing end-to-end move. Just when Pep Guardiola’s team was beginning to exert some real pressure after the break, Aubameyang produced another sublime finish. The Gabon international raced through to fire past goalkeeper Ederson in the 71st minute.

Arsenal comfortably soaked up City’s late pressure as it reached its 21st FA Cup final. “It was a great result against one of the best teams in the world. We were humble, we understood the way we had to play and we took the opportunities to score,” said Arsenal defender David Luiz, who has been in good form of late.

In the Premier League, Burnley got the better of the relegated Norwich City 2-0, which was down to nine men after two red cards in the first half.

 RESULTS:

FA Cup: Arsenal 2 beat Manchester City 0.

Premier League: Norwich City 0 lost to Burnley 2.

Serie A: AC Milan 5 beat Bologna 1; Cagliari 1 drew with Sassuolo 1; Verona 1 drew with Atalanta 1.
