Iniyan wins chess tourney

Grandmaster P Iniyan finished first in the 48th Annual World Chess Open Tournament by collecting 7.5 points from nine rounds.

Sjugiro Sanan of Russia also had the same number of points, but Erode-born Iniyan edged him out courtesy of better tie-breaks. Iniyan started the tournament with a draw and then came up trumps in the next six rounds. The 17-year-old once again shared the point in the final two rounds to come out on top in the event.

The nine-round tournament, which was conducted between August 7 and 9 at the Internet Chess Club, had as many as 122 participants from 16 countries. Although the event ended on August 9, the organiser officially announced the results only on Thursday as it had to check the fair play of the competitors.
