With the biggest opening day win in Bundesliga history, Bayern showed it has lost none of sharpness that helped it lift the Champions League trophy less than a month back. In what turned out to be a one-sided affair, the Hansi Flick-managed side stretched its unbeaten run to 31 games this year, having won the last 22 matches in a row.

Winger Gnabry netted the opener for the host in the fourth minute with a fine turn and shot. Schalke, without a league win in 17 consecutive games since January, was helpless against Bayern’s lightning-quick game. For the second goal, Leon Goretzka found plenty of space to drive a low shot past goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann in the 19th minute.

Bayern, which came up trumps in the Bundesliga, Champions League and German Cup last time out, found the back of the net again in the 31st minute. Robert Lewandowski, the 2019-20 season’s top goal-getter, converted a penalty and became the first player to score in 10 successive appearances against the same Bundesliga team.

After the breather, Gnabry scored twice from Sane’s assists in the 47th and 59th minutes. Thomas Muller then made it half-a-dozen goals after Lewandowski set him up with an impressive rabona kick.

Sane, who moved from Premier League club Manchester City in the summer, later capped his fantastic Bayern debut with a fine finish from a counter attack in an empty Allianz Arena.

It is to be noted that the city has banned spectators due to the rising coronavirus numbers in the region. Substitute Jamal Musiala drilled in goal number eight to become the youngest-ever Bayern scorer in the league at 17.

RESULTS: Bundesliga: Bayern Munich 8 beat Schalke 0.

Ligue 1: Lyon 0 drew with Nimes 0.
