French Open 2020: Prajnesh into Round 2 of Qualifiers

Prajnesh Gunneswaran made it to the second round of the French Open men’s singles qualifying event, but India’s top-ranked player Sumit Nagal bowed out.

On Monday, Chennai-based Prajnesh, who is India’s No.2, got the better of Turkey’s Cem Ilkel 6-3, 6-1. Seeded 16th, Nagal lost 6-7(4), 5-7 to German Dustin Brown in an hour and 47 minutes. Nagal led 3-0 in the second set, but could not stretch the match. Meanwhile, Simona Halep of Romania clinched the women’s singles title at the Italian Open as her opponent Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) retired with an injury while trailing 2-6, 0-1. This is Halep’s third title in 2020, having come up trumps in Dubai and Prague.
