The 14th edition of India’s second-tier competition will be hosted behind closed doors in Kolkata from January 9, 2021, with Chennai City playing its opening fixture against Gokulam Kerala FC (GKFC) on the same day. “The goal is to fight for top honours and I hope to be of help,” Avdic, one of head coach Satyasagara’s four foreign acquisitions, told DT Next.
“I am aware of the fact that CCFC clinched the title in 2018 19. I am eager to perform well individually, but I always insist on the team’s results. If we play well as a team and win, I will be satisfied,” added the 30-year-old journeyman.
The truncated I-League season will have a number of games in a short span with little time for recovery.
Talking about the gruelling assignment ahead, Serbian striker Avdic said: “It will certainly be hard. A good rest between matches is needed. As games are scheduled every 3-4 days, I hope that my teammates and I stay injury-free during that intense period. We must make full use of the off-days and try to get the best possible results on the pitch.” To ensure safe and smooth functioning amidst the raging COVID-19 pandemic, the I-League will be organised in a bio-secure environment in Kolkata. During the course of the event, those involved will be restricted to team hotels, training grounds and stadiums.
Asked if he is prepared for life in a bubble, Avdic explained: “Even before my arrival, I was familiar with the whole situation. So, there is no problem. It will be mentally difficult for the players, but the conditions are the same for all teams. I will have day-to-day conversations with my daughters, wife and parents so that time will move faster.” The upcoming edition of the I-League will mark Avdic’s debut in Asia. Having represented various European clubs, the frontman, currently on CCFC pre-season duty in Chennai, is pleased with his experience in India. “My first impression is very positive and is well above my expectation,” signed off new recruit Avdic.
