Officials claimed that exporters had withdrawn the shipment and the goods had not been stored in the cargo here. Tiruchy international airport has been handling exports at around 15 metric tonne on daily basis to Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Dubai and Kuwait directly and to South East Asia via Gulf countries. Mostly, it handles perishable goods like vegetables, flowers, fruits, fish and curd and other commodities like garments, fabric, leather, medicines and human hair. On an average, 26 tonne goods mainly assorted vegetables used to be handled in a week via 13 flights operated by Malindo to Malaysia.
However, since November 24, the Malindo aircraft failed to load cargo citing some problems at Kaula Lumpur airport. It is said, there has been a problem with the workers and the agency handling cargo ground clearance in Kuala Lumpur ended in an indefinite strike. The goods already exported had not been unloaded in Malaysia and it reflected in Tiruchy airport cargo. Since there is no indication of resuming cargo operation in Malaysia, the Tiruchy cargo temporarily stopped bookings. “We have not received any written communication so far and so we have been waiting as the cargo operation may resume at any time. until then, those who had booked shipment have diverted it to local market and no stock was there in the airport,” said an official.
