Protruding iron couplings pose a threat on Pamban bridge

The iron couplings on the Indira Gandhi Bridge famously called the Pamban Road Bridge were not yet fixed.

With the weekend rush starting from Friday, still the traffic is being regulated in only a part of the bridge owning to the damage. The iron couplings came out on November 27. Following the damage in the couplings a crack was also formed at the place on the bridge. It has become a major worry for tourists as only a part of the road is available for navigating across to the island. 

On Thursday night, an unsuspecting vehicle hit the barricade erected by the police and hit the police outpost on the other side without noticing the protruding iron couplings on the bridge.  If the couplings remain unattended for more time and the bridge was not repaired, many such incidents may recur as large number of tourists visit the island during the weekends. 

Most of the drivers bringing tourists would be new to the area also.  The officials attached to Highways Department made an emergency attempt to fix the cracks on the bridge but did not take steps to replace the iron couplings owing to which they were found lying on one side of the bridge unattended. They pose serious threats to the vehicles as the vehicles might even hit the parapet of the bridge if they accidentally ride on the iron plates that are
