An official from RMC Chennai said, “The depression over SouthEast Bay of Bengal lay centred at 11.30 hours IST on December 7 over east Bay of Bengal at 1,180 km South-Southeast of Vishakapatnam. The system is very likely to move northwest over the next 72 hours. It is very likely to intensify into deep depression during the next 24 hours and into a cyclonic storm in the subsequent 24 hours.” Pradeep John, who runs the Tamil Nadu Weatherman blog, said the conditions are superb in the open waters for the intensification of the cyclone. “The cyclone will move to an area where there is low wind shear, creating perfect conditions for the intensification of the cyclone over the next 2-3 days. The cyclonic storm, to be named as Vardah, can turn into a severe cyclonic storm. Till December 10 or 11, the dry spell will continue after which, we must wait and watch,” he said. Srikanth, a weather blogger at Chennaiyil Oru Mazhaikkaalam (COMK), said, “The landfall will be known only by Friday morning.”
