Brain dead man gives new lease of life to five

The organs of a 28-year-old man, who was declared brain dead in a private hospital in nearby Erode, will give a new lease of life to five persons, after his family donated them.

After getting the parents’ consent, the deceased K Venkatachalam was brought to Kovai Medical Centre and Hospital (KMCH) here and a team of doctors from KMCH and government hospital harvested the liver, both kidneys and eyes, a hospital release said on Saturday. 

While the liver and kidneys were transplanted at KMCH, the eyes were sent to a private hospital in this city. 

Venkatachalam, hailing from Salem district had an accident, on December seven, in which he had suffered serious head injuries. 

Though he was taken to the KMCH in nearby Erode, he was declared brain dead.

As his father Kandasamy, a farmer and mother Sarojini of Thathapuram Village, Salem district, stood clueless, local panchayat president, Arasimathaiyan, advised them to go for organ donation, it said.  

Engineering student ends life over low marks Meanwhile, an engineering student allegedly committed suicide by jumping before a moving train here, after scoring poor marks in a recent examination, police said on Saturday. 

The incident came to light on Saturday morning when some walkers noticed the body parts of the victim lying on a  railway track in Avaramalayam and informed the police. 

The 21-year-old student of a private college in Salem, was dejected for the last few days over the low marks scored in a few subjects, police said. 

A case has been registered and investigation is on, they said.
