Leopard, wild boar prey falls into well

A two-year-old leopard chased a wild boar near Gudalur in The Nilgiris on December 13. Unfortunately, both the animals fell into an open well at Cherambadi. The well had water to a depth of about 20 feet and the animals struggled to get out.

According to Forest Department officials, the well belongs to J Thomas of Karakolli village in Gudalur Forest Division. Villagers who spotted the animals informed the forest department who rushed to the spot. They began efforts to rescue the animals which were struggling for life in the cold water.

Not wanting to hurt them, they initially lowered a bamboo ladder into the well, they coaxed both the animals to climb out. The leopard finally climbed out of the well, after an hour, using the ladder, close to midnight. It immediately ran into the forest. But as the boar could not take the cue, it died of injuries in the water body.

The officials were prepared to treat the leopard if it too had been injured. But since it leapt with ease into the forest, they felt if might not have needed treatment. Way back in the third week of October, officials had rescued a leopard that had fallen into a open well in a nearby village at Cherambadi.
