Though the present AIADMK government has another four-anda-half years to complete its term, it is to be seen whether the party will back Sasikala in testing electoral waters by entering the RK Nagar by-poll. A section of party men expressed confidence that chances of success for her were high as the sympathy factor might work in her favour. However, political analyst T.
George said “People, especially women, in rural areas may not support Sasikala, since to them, she is still seen as Jayalalithaa’s confidante, whereas they will see people like OPS as politicians.”
As far as the alliance equation goes, the BJP may try to align with AIADMK in the future to expand its base in Tamil Nadus, but the disproportionate wealth cases against Sasikala will be a key point for the saffron party to ponder over before arriving at a decision AM Sakthivel, a long-time AIADMK cadre, attributes the support from all quarters in the party to Sasikala to the attitude of going with the prevailing mood. He says the second rung leaders may be rewarded with some key posts.
Earlier a section of Supreme Court lawyers owing allegiance to the AIADMK stated that they would not hesitate to start a party in Jayalalithaa’s name if Sasikala was given the top position in the party.
The plan to elevate Sasikala as the general secretary has come under severe criticism on the social media. Durai Gobi from the Gulf who raised embarrassing questions about Jayalalithaa’s death said on Facebook that he and his family members were feeling uncomfortable as they were receiving threats from several unknown quarters, especially from the Delta districts.
