Woman’s immolation bid thwarted in Tiruchy

A 33-year-old woman who alleged domestic violence from her husband attempted self-immolation at the collectorate here during the weekly grievance meet on December 19. However, the alert police and fire service personnel thwarted the bid.

The woman who was identified as Jaya (33) wife of Bhagyaraj, residing at Chinnasamudram village in Manapparai taluk of the district, claimed that she was undergoing physical as well as mental abuse for several months by her husband Bhagyaraj who has been running utensil shop in Maravanur village. She claimed that her husband is involved in several extra marital affairs and has been reportedly torturing her physically. Jaya, along with her two children aged 13 and 8 moved to her paternal house near Manapparai after loding a complaint against her husband with Manapparai All Women Police personnel and also at the Superintendent of Police office but no action has been initiated so far, said Jaya.Finding no option, Jaya managed to sneak into the collectorate with a bottle of kerosene and attempted self- immolation.  However, the fire service personnel thwarted her attempts. Later she submitted her petition to the collector.
