Thuraiyur victims’ kin told to appear in court

The relatives of the 19 victims of Vettrivel Explosives factory explosion in Thuraiyur have been summoned by the Musiri Judicial Magistrate to appear in person on December 27. The cases were filed as men missing as the bodies were not found in full leading to mismatch of body parts.

Due to the heavy blast in the explosive unit at Vetrivel Explosives factory at Murungapatti near Thuraiyur, 19 workers on work at the particular time died and their bodies were strewn across the factory premises. Since the bodies were scattered, the rescue team could not retrieve any of the body the victims in full. And so, the body parts which were collected from the factory premises were sent for a DNA test in Chennai. Since the bodies could not be traced, the Uppliyapuram police registered cases under section of Man missing initially and then the CB-CID police which took charge of investigations too, commenced their investigation under the same section. Meanwhile, on Monday the kin of all the 19 victims were issued summons by Musiri Court and were directed to appear before the Magistrate on December 27.  Based on the direction, the blood relatives including parents, siblings and children or wife are directed to appear on the day. Sources said, this is one of the formal hearings for confirming the death and it would clear the way for further proceeding and recommending the government for compensation.
