Shutting liquor shops will bring down crimes: Bedi
Puducherry Lt Governor Kiran Bedi said even though Puducherry will experience a decline in liquor revenue due to the implementation of the order of the Supreme Court on removal of liquor shops from highways, there will be some relief from alcohol related crimes.

Inaugurating a Legal Awareness progamme on Child Abuse with Banner and slides relating to prevention of Child Abuse based on NALSA (Child friendly Legal services to Children and the Protection) scheme, 2015 and publicity of Legal Services activities through SMS, organized by Union Territory of Puducherry Legal Services (UTPLSA) here last evening, she said that after March the number of alcohol shops in the Union territory will come down, leading to decline in revenue.
Puducherry government should not depend on such a revenue as the alcoholism will go down, Ms Bedi said. She said that a good portion of such revenue goes in treatment of diseases, fighting crime and other evils of alcoholism and added that reduction in alcoholism would lead to a healthy society. Alcoholism is linked to child abuse, domestic violence, suicides and other crimes and accidents, she added.
The Lt Governor also called upon beat police to work closely with NGOs, Anganwadi and Balwadi wokers, senior citizens and residential associations to prevent child abuses and stressed on the need for creating an awareness on parenting for prevention of child abuses. Presiding over the function, M Jaichandran, Judge of Madras High court and Executive Chairman of UTPLSA said that children should be encouraged to come out openly on abuses happening to them.
