The District Mahila Court Judge N Thirunavukkarasu awarded the sentence to Karthick and his parents, Shanmugham and Shanthi, of Veerappanchatram in Erode, for allegedly abetting the suicide of one Manimozhi, who was in love with Karthick. The prosecution case was that Karthick’s parents had agreed to his relationship with Manimozhi and decided to conduct their marriage.
Meanwhile in 2013, the boy’s father, Shanmugam had pledged some jewels in a bank, in the name of Manimozhi. A few days later on February 23, 2013, Shanmugam had asked Manimozhi to recover the pledged jewels, by giving her the money.
However, when she returned the jewels, he had told her that he had pledged 7 sovereigns of gold jewels, while she had brought only four sovereigns from the bank. He then demanded that she paid him for the remaining three sovereigns, failing which her marriage would be called off.
A frustrated Manimozhi committed suicide by hanging herself in her house. Based on a complaint from the girl’s father, the police arrested Karthick, Shanmugam and Shanthi for abetting the girl to commit suicide.
