Descendents join Kattabomman’s 257th anniversary celebrations

Veerapandiya Kattabomman was the Poligar of Panchalankurichi and was one of the earliest to revolt against the sovereignty of British. He fought against the British and was arrested by them on October 1, 1799 and was subsequently hung on October 16, 1799, at Kayathar. There are conflicting theories about his arrest though it is popularly believed that he was betrayed.  

At Panchalankurchi his fort was renewed and is maintained by Archeological Survey Of India where his statue is present. A memorial for Veerapandiya Kattabomman was constructed at Kayathar in Thoothukudi district where he was put to death. 

On Tuesday, his birth anniversary was celebrated at Panchalankurchi Fort. His statue was garlanded by his descendants and members of various political parties. Jegaveera Pandiya Subramaniya Kattabommu Durai, the fifth generation descendant of Veerapandiya Kattabomman, garlanded the statue. He was followed by functionaries of MDMK who also garlanded the statue. Earlier a special prayer was offered at Veera Jekka Devi temple and Jegaveera Pandiyan accepted the respect that was offered to him as part of the tradition. 

Similarly at Madurai, the statue of Veerapandiya Kattabomman which is present near Periyar Bus stand was garlanded by members of various political parties and organisations based at Madurai.
