Police on Saturday said that acting on a tip-off a police team checked a lorry that was parked at Vavikkadai village near Perundurai and found 60 wooden boxes and some gunny bags containing household items besides a few other articles.

On a thorough check of the articles, the team found as many as 15,600 gelatine sticks in one of the wooden boxes, police said adding the items were reportedly being smuggled into Kerala from Salem.

As the driver was not carrying a proper license or receipt to transport the consignment, all the boxes and the gelatin sticks worth Rs 12 lakh were confiscated, they said. A case has been registered under the Explosives Act. Further investigations are on to ascertain the reasons behind the transportation of such a huge consignment of explosive materials, police said.

In another incident, a gelatin stick fitted with a detonator was seized from a government-owned Transport Corporation bus in Sathy.
