The youth were carrying a little over 1,000 saplings of various species in a mini van and distributed to every passer-by. “Our target is to distribute at least 10,000 saplings from Saturday. Since rains have started, we thought, it will be the ideal time for our mission,” explained Dominic Xavier, a CA aspirant from Lalgudi.
“It is a 15-member brigade from Lalgudi and surrounding places. All of them are students. We thought that it is the need of the hour as the community is facing numerous problems due to the waning green cover,” said Vishwa, BE student from Lalgudi area.
The students said that they carefully selected the species. They also choose only Indian varieties, which would provide enough shade. “These saplings can withstand the climate changes in Tiruchy district and the people can plant them in front of their houses or on streets. We request them to spend a few minutes to water them every day so that the mind and body would also be active and relaxed”, D Xavier said.
The youngsters have contributed from their pockets and purchased the saplings from a nursery garden in Lalgudi, which offered them at wholesale rate. “Today we have brought 1,000 saplings and have almost finished the day’s job. We have planned to distribute at least 10,000 saplings though a small number would be help in increasing the green line in the city. But the fruits of our effort would be big, wait and see,” was their parting shot.
