The villagers have demanded the police to immediately arrest the miscreants who damaged the idols. In the first instance that happened on Mattu Pongal day, the people noticed the amman idol in the Odai Karuppanasamy temple broken and the top portion missing. Since, the temple was located on the outskirts, the act of vandalism was noticed only little later by the locals. Though they lodged a complaint to Tirumangalam police no action was taken, the villagers claimed.
Even as no one was arrested in connection with the previous incident, the second one, the damage of Odai Karuppanasamy idol, happened on Friday leaving the whole village in a state of shock and anger. One hand of the idol was broken and it was taken away by the miscreants. People, who had gone to offer worship at the temple, noticed it and alerted the villagers.
Residents gathered at the temple and decided to stage a protest until the accused were arrested. One of the villagers, Balasubramanian, said “Some miscreants, who are not happy with the peaceful coexistence in the village, should have done this.”
“The idols were broken with the intention of disturbing the communal harmony and creating tension. However, we will stand united and protest till the accused are brought to book,” he added.
Selvam, another resident of the village, said “Despite our complaint to police, no action has been taken so far. The policemen visited the place for namesake and registered a case based on our complaint. No progress had been made in the first case and the second incident has left us agitated.”
