Hit by bull, man dies after rekla race in Thoothukudi

In a shocking end to a rekla race held on Sunday at Seidhunganallur in Thoothukudi, a bull which run amok attacked a man from Nattarkulam badly. Anthonisamy was immediately rushed to the Srivaikuntam GH, but he was declared brought dead.

In the race conducted at Seidhunganallur Main Road, lot of bulls participated. At the end of the race, the bull owners were busy lifting their bulls on to the vehicles. Suddenly, a bull ran out of control in the place. It attacked 52-year-old Anthonisamy before being held back by the owners.

The organisers and the people of Seidhunganallur, who had seen a rekla race after two years’ ban, were shocked by the sudden turn of events which lead to the death of Anthonisamy. Seidhunganallur police are investigating. 

The rekla race at Vilathikulam in Thoothukudi was conducted on Sunday with two categories. One for large bull carts and another for small bull carts. 

Two bulls would be pulling a large cart and only a single bull would be pulling the small cart. The distance of the races too varied. Large bull carts race up to a distance of 14 km and the small bull carts cover a distance of 10 km. 

On Sunday, nearly 11 carts took part in the large cart category. Vinoth Kumar from Vellore in Virudhunagar district won the first prize in the race. In the small cart race, 34 bulls raced down the distance and the cart belonging to Bullet team of Sayalkudi in Ramanathapuram district came first.
