International courier services yet to take off in Tiruchy

With the Ministry of Finance having notified Tiruchy International Airport for courier imports and exports as early as 2013, the process is yet to take off owing to various reasons, keeping the prospective low volume parcel services as a non-starter. AAI is waiting for the trade notification from the Customs department.

The erstwhile import cargo terminal is being converted into a dedicated terminal for both inbound and outbound courier operations. The work for setting up a spacious area to handle the consignments, separate offices for Airport Authority of India (AAI) staff as well as customs and rest rooms is underway and the courier service would commence very soon, said airport authorities.

If it becomes functional, the terminal will help Tamil Nadu people staying Singapore, Malaysia, Dubai and far east countries taste their home-made recipes like spicy biryani, pickle and region-specific snacks such as Nellai Iruttukadai Halwa, Manapparai Murukku as these items will reach their doorsteps in a day.

Similarly, life-saving drugs can also be sent or received through this service and emergency documents such as medical reports, tissue culture, scientific components, printed sheets could also be transported through this facility. As per the Customs Act, except gold, currency and some banned drugs, all other things can be couriered. Unlike the other modes of clearance, it would reach a particular destination at the earliest, officials from Tiruchy airport said. Currently, the courier agencies are sending their consignments either from Chennai or Bengaluru. Once the courier agencies register with the customs department, permission would granted after due verification by the authorities. As the Finance Department has already issued their notification in this regard, AAI is waiting for the trade notification to be issued shortly by the customs department.

According to SA Sayeed, President, Express Courier Operators Association, it is possible to deliver the shipment within a day at any destination abroad particularly Singapore, Malaysia and Australia after the international courier operation begins. Due to the delay in issuing notification by the Customs authorities, the launch is getting delayed.
