Kids sound loud in corporation school as KG section a hit

The kindergarten section, which was introduced in just 30 corporation schools in 1996, is now available in 200 of the total 281 Corporation schools. “These schools have good infrastructure and attractive uniforms. Some of the teachers are trained in Montessori method and this has gone well with the parents and helped in boosting the admission rate. The meal scheme and additional coaching classes are other impressive features. For families belonging to disadvantaged background, we provide education free of cost. With private schools’ fee being on the higher side, kindergarten section available in corporation schools have become a boon for parents,” said D Ranjini, Educational Officer, Greater Chennai Corporation.

In 2015-16, there were around 86,000 on rolls overall from LKG to class 12 and in the current academic year, the number is 87,748. The total strength of kindergarten alone is 11,000,” she added.

Deputy Commissioner for Education Govinda Rao said, “The government schools admit students from LKG, UKG and Class 1. The kindergarten section is a huge success”.

Recently, the ASER (Annual Status of Education Report) survey report found that Tamil Nadu has an impressive 99.6 per cent enrolment in schools in the children age group of 6 to 14 and their aggregate attendance has been around 90 per cent since 2010, which is one of the highest in the country. Some of the findings say that the reading level of government school children was higher compared to private schools.

Ranjini also mentioned that teachers take additional effort and help students from economically weaker section hone their skills and fare well in board exams. “In the evening, they are provided with healthy food and they stay until 9 pm for coaching classes. The boys sometime stay back in school preparing for the exams,” she added.
