The incident had happened on Sunday evening when fire, started in a house located at the southern coast of Rameswaram near the St Antony’s Church, soon spread to nearby huts. Eight huts were completely damaged in the accident.
Though Fire and Rescue department personnel reached the spot on time, they could not do much to control the fire, as the wind was too heavy. Properties worth lakhs were destroyed in the fire, it is said.
Rameswaram police are investigating the cause of the incident. Local Revenue and Fisheries Department officials consoled the fishermen in person and promised them compensation.
In yet another fire accident, miscreants torched the Amalai plants at a bird sanctuary in Therur near Suseendiram due to which thousands of birds, mostly of foreign origin, left the sanctuary.
Forest department was immediately alerted and the officials were in the process of ascertaining the damages caused to the bird sanctuary.
