National TB Week under Revised National Tuberculosis Program has been observed between February 17 to 23. During this week various awareness programs were conducted and the TB patients were contacted in person for ensuring complete cure.

At Vallanadu Government TB Centre in Thoothukudi district, the patients were distributed a kit in which nutritious food items were present. They were also given monetary aid to help them during the treatment period. Abdul Raheem Heera, Senior Surgery Supervisor at Vallanadu Government TB Centre, said that they had obtained private sponsorship for the distribution of nutritious food to them.

The kit had food items such as dates, wheat, corn, green gram, black eyed pea, chenna, groundnuts and other items which would boost the health of the patients undergoing treatment for TB. A pack of nutritious food costs around Rs 700. Nearly 12 persons received the kit at this Centre.

“Nutritious food are a must for patients undergoing treatment for the disease,” said Heera and added that the patients were also provided monetary assistance while they were getting treated to lessen their financial burden.

He also said that awareness programmes like street play, school-based awareness programmes on TB would be carried out during the week. “We are also reaching out to the patients directly to ensure regular medication and treatment for early recuperation of the patients,” concluded Heera.
