On Sunday morning, when Polimer TV reporter Chandran went out to buy milk, two drug peddlers Dinesh and Karuppu stalked and stabbed him suddenly.
Unsuspecting Chandran sustained injuries in his left abdomen and left shoulder. He was immediately rushed to the Meenakshi Mission Hospital by the residents and admitted to the ICU. After treatment, doctors declared him out of danger.
Chandran, a resident of Postal and Telegraph Nagar in Madurai city, along with other residents of the locality had lodged a complaint against a gang peddling ganja in the area in October 2016. Based on the complaint Tallakulam police registered a case against the gang and arrested seven drug peddlers.
In an act of retaliation, the gang members, who managed to come out on bail, attacked the reporter’s 18-year-old son. A case was registered on the attack incident and it was also pending against the gang of ganja peddlers.
In the meantime, the drug menace cropped up once again in the locality. This time, the residents tipped off police on the activities of the gang and once again lodged a complaint against the peddlers. Police arrested them. But they came out on bail. However, the gang conspired to murder Chandran to instil fear among the residents who go against their illegal activities.
Two of them waited for a chance and stabbed the reporter with an intention to murder him, while he came out early in the morning to buy milk on Sunday. Following the incident police visited the spot and carried out investigations. An attempt to murder case was filed at Kudal Pudhur police station.
Police were on the lookout for the accused.
In the hospital, doctors said the reporter would be moved to an ordinary ward in couple of days.
