Mentally-ill Kovai man ends life after murdering father

A 31-year-old man from Coimbatore ended his life by hanging in his house after murdering his father in a hospital in Kerala on Saturday. According to the Coimbatore City Police, Yasser Arafat (31), a resident of Saramedu in Karumbukadai in the city, owned a painting unit at Chokkampudur.

The man was an alcoholic and a drug addict. His father Abdul Jaffar (55) was an electrician. Police inquiries revealed that Yasser Arafat often picked up a quarrel with his 28-year-old wife and father. It is learnt that he had also started abusing his customers as well recently. 

As his condition has been worsening by the day, his family decided to take him to a psychiatric hospital in Kerala. 

On Saturday afternoon, his father Abdul Jaffar took him to a private hospital in Malampuzha, of Palakkad district, Kerala. The youth was given medicines to control anger. Jaffar was alone with him while other relatives left the hospital. 

Around 3.30 pm Yasser Arafat who woke up from his bed, fought with his father and stabbed him with a screw driver. The 55-year-old man succumbed to injuries on the spot. Yasser Arafat fled the hospital and returned to Coimbatore. Meanwhile Malampuzha Police registered a case against Arafat under section 302 (punishment for murder) of the Indian Penal Code and began a search for him. 

Malampuzha police went in search of him to his house at Saramedu. They were informed by the relatives that he had not turned up home. But the police were taken to his shop at Chokkampudhur by the relatives as they suspected that he might be hiding there. But they were shocked by the scene that greeted them as they found Arafat hanging dead. 

The Selvapuram police have sent the body for an autopsy.
