Protest against Cauvery borewell project

The concerned villagers submitted a petition in this regard at the end of the rally. Tiruchy has already begun to witness protests over the water situation, even though summer is still far away. Many residents have been staging various protests seeking regularised supply of potable water to the households.
Meanwhile, residents of Kambarasampettai, situated just about 12 km from the city limits, have been firmly opposing the proposed comprehensive drinking water scheme from Cauvery river bed aimed at meeting the water needs of city. With as much as 27 MLD (Million Litres per Day) slated to be drawn under the proposed comprehensive drinking water scheme to address the drinking water needs of Tiruchy, the villagers have claimed that the open wells in their households could plunge by 50-80 feet below the present groundwater level, if the project is implemented.
Urging the district administration to drop the drinking water project that would affect groundwater table of Kambarasampettai village, about 500 villagers met Collector K S Palanisamy who had assured the petitioners that appropriate decision would be taken keeping in mind the best interests of all.
