The woman, Saburbanu from Chinthamani in Madurai, claimed that she had joined the appalam company seven years ago, operating in the same locality. The owner of the company had given her Rs 50,000 as advance and owing to her financial constraints, the woman had taken both her daughters to work.
According to an agreement between Saburbanu and the owner, the latter had agreed to pay her Rs 2,000 per week as salary and had said that Rs 1,000 would be deducted as part of the repayment of the advance money. Incidentally, she, along with her husband and her children, lived on the first floor of the company and would pay Rs 1,500 as rent.
Meanwhile, Saburbanu had started developing problems in her eyes. She could no longer work properly and hence wanted to quit. But the owner refused to heed her request, claiming that the advance amount was yet to be repaid. The owner had also threatened to murder her two girls, if she stopped coming for work.
Hence, Saburbanu sought the help of the district administration to rescue both her daughters stuck in the factory.
