Sources said that all 40 children are being treated in a segregated ward and are from different regions of the district. The recent rainfall is suspected to be the reason behind the increasing number of fevers, they said. However, Muthu, district secretary, DYFI, said that it is due to the failure of the officials to monitor the health and sanitary services across the district.
“There is severe shortage of drinking water in Thoothukudi Corporation which forced people to consume water from unsafe sources, leading the increase in the number of dengue cases. The officials must act immediately to stop the spread of the disease by supplying dengue drops to the houses. The hospital should also ensure that all the children are getting enough drugs and there should be no fatality,” said Muthu.
Santhana Kumar, Dean, Thoothukudi Medical College Hospital, said that there are enough beds and medicines to treat the suffering children. Their blood samples have been collected and once dengue is confirmed the treatment will begin.
