Storage in dams surge as rains pound Western Ghats

Rains continued to lash the Western Ghats in Theni and Tirunelveli districts for the second day on Thursday.

Kumbakarai falls in Theni district witnessing a heavy flow

The downpour has triggered a heavy flow in the Kumbakarai falls in Theni district. Following this, officials have restricted bathing by tourists at the falls. The situation was similar in Suruli and other falls as well in the district. 

The southern districts have been receiving widespread rains for the past 10 days. Though it is bright and sunny during the day, showers ranging from moderate to heavy lash most parts in the evening. Due to the continuous rains in the Western Ghats the storage in the dam have been witnessing a steady increase. 

Rural Madurai experienced good rains and Sathiar dam recorded 37 mm followed by Pulipatti 23.20 mm and Kallandri 21 mm. 

In Tirunelveli district, there was widespread rain in the catchment of most of the dams located close to the Western Ghats. 

Papanasam recorded the highest rainfall of 67 mm followed by Servalaru 59 mm and Sengottai 22 mm.
