The TNCC chief, who was in Salem to pay homage to Muthukrishnan on Saturday, gave a compensation of Rs 1 lakh on behalf of the party to the student’s family, Thirunavukkarasar said that the compensation of Rs 3 lakh provided by the state government to the family was inadequate. “The state government should have at least given Rs 10 lakh as relief to the family,” he added.
Charging that sudden deaths of students belonging to Dalit and oppressed communities were on the rise after the BJP came to power, the state Congress chief said that it was time the government introduced a special act to protect Dalits students from the atrocities of the Hindutva outfits. “We (Congress) will support if the Centre proposes such an act,” he said.
Meanwhile, he condemned the attack on Union Minister Pon Radhakrishnan, when the latter came for the JNU student’s funeral in Salem.
Talking about the incident of a youth representing a fringe outfit hurling a slipper at the Union Minister on Thursday, he said such incidents should be avoided.
About the RK Nagar bypoll, Thirunavukkarasar said he would soon start campaigning for their alliance (DMK) candidate and said “We are confident that Marudhu Ganesh will win by big margin.”
Later in the day the TNCC chief started to Coimbatore to take part in a programme.
