The deceased, identified as Dharani, was a first-year student at a private women’s college in Sivaganga. Kumar, a relative of Dharani and working at a leather company in Chennai, was in love with her. Six months ago, Kumar along with his parents, demanded that her parents accept his proposal of marriage with Dharani.
As Dharani’s parents refused to relent, Kumar began to stalk her. On Sunday, Dharani’s brother and mother had gone out of their house while Dharani went shopping with her friend.
By afternoon knowing that Dharani was alone at her home, Kumar barged in, increased the volume of the TV and hacked her to death when she refused to accept him. Villagers noticed him with the blood-stained sickle outside Dharani’s house, and nabbed him. When they went inside the house, they found Dharani lying dead in a pool of blood. Thiruvadanai Police who were informed arrived and took him into custody.
The body of Dharani was shifted to Thiruvadanai GH for post-mortem examination.
