Work on Pondy port to be completed soon: Kandasamy
A week after the Puducherry government and Chennai Port signed a MoU for developing the UT port as a satellite of the Chennai Port, Puducherry Minister M Kandasamy on Tuesday inspected the port here in respect of handling of containers.

Talking to newspersons on the occasion Kandasamy said the dredging operations at the estuary is being done by the machines of the Dredging Corporation of India (DCI) and the Karaikal Marg Port and the deepening work of the estuary would soon be completed. After dredging out three lakh cubic meters of sand the port development works would be undertaken, he said.
Kandasamy said that in a bid to transport the containers unloaded at the port to other destinations, the 20 feet road between Ouppalam and Mudaliarpet would be widened as a 30 feet road.
Discussions with legislators Anbazhagan and Jayamurty in this regard had already been completed, he added.
All infrastructure facilities would be provided at the port to ensure the berthing of cargo ships, he said, adding that the funds required for the same would be obtained either as loan or advance from the Chennai Port.
Technical experts from the Chennai Port would also visit Puducherry soon to examine the provision of required infrastructure at the port, Kandasamy said.
The Minister said as much as 16,000 tonnes of cargo could be handled in a single day in the four godowns available at the port and added overall 200 containers could be handled in a day.
Efforts are being made to execute the project without causing any hardships to the people, Kandasamy said.
