Fortunately, the injury inflicted was not serious and the victim is recuperating at a private hospital in Teynampet. The incident happened around 6.45 am at Bhagavandhan Street, West Mambalam.
The woman, Suchi Sumitha (32), was walking towards the bus stop when the accused R Raghunath (23) suddenly pounced on her and stabbed her in the abdomen. When Suchi cried for help, Raghunath tried to escape, but was apprehended by the public. The youth was thoroughly beaten before being handed over to the police.
The police said, the victim Suchi was working as a manager at Ashok Leyland at Manali New Town for the last five years. Raghunath also worked in the same company as a contract employee. Both used to travel in the company’s bus and last year Suchi filed a complaint against him after he allegedly sexually harassed her while on the bus. Following this, the company authorities reported the matter to the contract company and later fired Raghunath.
“When he could not find another job, he started contemplating revenge against Suchi. He began stalking her for the last two days,” a police official attached to Mambalam police station said.
He told the police that he was angry as she was the reason for him losing his job. Police said Raghunath is a native of Sivakasi and a mechanical engineer.
He was staying at a men’s hostel in Perungudi. The accused was later produced before the magistrate’s court and has been remanded to judicial custody.
