The Collector was there on the college campus to participate as chief guest in a TB awareness programme on Friday. When he reached the venue, he was shocked to see water sachets strewn all over in front of the venue. When he inquired, officials told him that water sachets were earlier distributed to students who had participated in a rally.

Then he started picking up the discarded water sachets and put them into garbage bins nearby. In his address at the TB awareness programmes he appealed to the students to dispose the garbage in dustbins. Unsafe disposal of waste was the key reason for the outbreak of several diseases, he added.

“Students must cultivate the habit of putting the garbage into dustbins to keep the environment and the city clean. Youngsters should also come forward to keep Madurai clean. Madurai is the pivot of Tamil culture and is renowned for developing the language through sangams,” he said. The youth of Madurai should set an example for others and must thrive for pristine atmosphere, he added.
