On a PIL filed by Vaiko, the Madurai bench of the High Court had recently ordered removal of the trees and other weeds which harm the ecosystem.

The court had also appointed advocate-commissioners to oversee implementation of its directive. The project to clear the trees, started off at a brisk pace, but slowed down due to insufficiency of funds.

Hence, it was decided to create a fund for the eradication of trees, which caused widespread ecological problems across the state including water problem.

Justice A Selvam, whose bench ordered the removal of the trees, contributed Rs. 10,000 and some senior adovcates followed suit.

Lending his support, Vaiko today deposited Rs. 15,000 in the account created for the purpose, officials said.
