Joint Action Committee to meet Kerala CM over Bhavani issue

Conveying this to DTNext, convener of the JAC Ku Ramakrishnan, who led a fast in Coimbatore on Thursday, condemned the Tamil Nadu government and the Centre for not taking quick action to settle the issue. “They constructed a check dam at Thekuvattai in 40 days and laid the foundation for the second at Manjakandi,” he said. 

Explaining the need for immediately stopping the construction, he said that any delay would facilitate the construction of all the six check dams that they have planned to construct across the river. “Since leaders of various political parties in our JAC are busy with the RK Nagar by-poll our delegation will meet the Kerala CM after the bypoll,” he added. 

Meanwhile, farmer representatives, who took part in the fast, said that the state government should appoint an advocate, who could take up the case before the Supreme Court in time and argue for the cause of farmers and people of this region who are affected by the check dams. They made it clear that farmers would no longer be passive spectators, but intensify the protests that would give the state and Union governments no other option but to fulfil their demands.

A similar protest was organised over the issue at Chennimalai in Erode district too. Close to 300 persons participated in the fast.
